AmaKristina Christening

A ship’s christening is a long-standing tradition within the cruise industry originating more than 4,000 years ago. The momentous ceremony features the blessing of the ship by an appointed Godmother and concludes with a more recent good luck tradition of breaking a bottle of champagne against the ship’s hull. AmaWaterways proudly marked the arrival of the AmaKristina on May 10 in Lahnstein, Germany. The special christening event celebrates the arrival of AmaWaterways’ 20th ship and marks our 15th year anniversary.

Defining Moments – The Christening of a Very Special Ship

On May 10 in Lahnstein, Germany, a very special lady of the AmaWaterways family, Kristin Karst, Co-Owner and Executive Vice President, and the Godmother of the new AmaKristina, christened her namesake.

“I never dreamed that as a young girl growing up in Dresden on the banks of the Elbe River that I would one day have a ship named after me.”

The Tradition Continues

It is believed that a Godmother brings a feminine benevolent spirit to the ship and protects the future sailings and its passengers. And the sacrificial smashing of a champagne bottle on the hull by the Godmother is believed to impart the ship with her personality. For those who will be traveling on the new AmaKristina on the Enchanting Rhine itinerary, they can expect to be treated to the most beautiful, stylish and graceful ship as the Godmother and namesake, Kristin Karst, personifies the vessel.
